
Support for Southwest Detroit Flood Recovery
Many residents in Southwest Detroit are facing significant hardship following the 54-inch water transmission line break that occurred in the early hours of February 17. The impact of this event is severe, with families displaced from their homes and in need of immediate and ongoing assistance.
While media coverage is highlighting the crisis now, recovery efforts will extend for weeks. Cleanup and home restoration are expected to take at least six weeks, making continued support essential.
Several community organizations, including the Southwest Detroit Business Association, Congress of Communities, Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation, and Detroiters Helping Detroiters, have mobilized to provide assistance. Here’s how you can help:
Donate Essential Items
Many affected families are temporarily housed in hotels but still need supplies to begin the cleanup process and maintain daily life. The following items are in high demand:
New, unopened clothing:
- Men’s underwear (S-3XL), women’s underwear (all sizes), bras, children’s underwear
- Socks for adults and kids
- Robes, t-shirts, slippers/slides for all ages
Personal hygiene products:
- Razors & shaving cream, body wipes, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, lotion
- Q-tips, nail clippers, feminine hygiene products
- Laundry detergent, diapers (all sizes), hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes
- Hand & foot warmers, hair clippers
Household items & food:
- Heaters, fans, dehumidifiers, washcloths, blankets
- Fresh fruit, canned food (with can openers), microwaveable meals
- Non-perishable snacks (crackers, granola bars), sandwich bags
- Paper plates, plastic utensils, cases or gallons of water
Cleaning supplies:
- Brooms, mops, buckets, scrub brushes, rubber gloves
- Bleach, disinfectant, and other cleaning products
Drop-off Location:
Items can be dropped off at 7752 W. Vernor Hwy, Detroit, MI 48209, Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Donate Financially
Monetary donations are also critical. Families may need assistance beyond basic supplies, including medical equipment and medications. A dedicated donation website has been set up to provide direct financial support.
