Q. How do I become a Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association Member?

A. An on-line application can be accessed by clicking below. Print the pdf file and complete it. Forward the application with payment in either check or credit card to the DMBA Offices at 645 Griswold, Suite 1356, Detroit MI 48226. 
 
Q. What types of memberships does the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association offer and what are the dues?

A. The DMBA offers the following types of membership catagories and dues:     

FREE (Attorney 70 years and retired from practicing law)
$250 (Attorney 
in practice 10 years or more)
$220 (Attorney in practice 5 - 9 years in practice)
$150 (Attorney in practice 2 - 4 years in practice)
$100 (Judge, Government Attorney, Public Service, Academic, Non-Profit)
FREE (was $95) (Attorney in practice 1 year or less)       

$75   (Paralegal, Legal Administrator, Legal Assistant, Librarian)
$25   (Students: Law School, Paralegal Student or Legal Assistant Student)


 

Q. What is the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association membership year?

A. The membership year is from January 1 through December 31.

 

Q. I am already a Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association member. When will I be asked to renew my membership?

A. Dues renewal invoices are mailed in mid November.  The deadline for return is the last day of January in the following year.

 

Q. If I allowed my Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association membership to lapse. How can I be reinstated?

A. Fill out a new membership application for the year in which you would like to be reinstated.

 

Q. Is there a way to rejoin without losing my continuous member status?

A. Yes, Submit dues for those years that you would like to have count toward your continuous membership.  Contact the DMBA office to get an accurate determination of what is required.

 

Q. If I join the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association during the middle of the bar year, will my dues be pro-rated?

he Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association does not prorate dues. You are expected to pay your dues in full whenever you decide to join or renew your membership. The DMBA may, however, run special membership drives during the year that offer unique membership opportunities for a limited time.

Q. Do you offer any discounts through membership?
A.
The Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association offers discounts, many of which provide significant savings for members; Members can refer to the complete listing in the Marketplace Section of the website. Look for the DMBA Member Benefit Partner logo to identify those companies and services that are specially discounted for DMBA Members.

Q. How do I become a member of a Section?

A.
Once you register as a member of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, simply state the desired section(s) you wish to join and you will be put on that section(s) mailing list. You will receive meeting notices and any other relevant information. AS a special incentive


Q. How do I become a member of a Committee?

A. Board of Director Committees require appointment by the President. Depending on the committee, membership may be self-selected (Legal Assistants and the various Court Committees) or appointed by the Chair (Access to Justice, Judicial Candidate Evaluation).

 

Q. How do I become a Chair of a Committee or Section?

A. All appointments are made by the President of the Board of Directors.  If you are interested in such a posiiton contact the current Presidnet in writing (either email, fax or regular mail) to express your interest and qualifications.

 

Q. Where is the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association located?
A. The Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association's address is 645 Griswold, Suite 1356, Detroit Michigan 48226. The DMBA is located in the Penobscot Building in Downtown Detroit in the Campus Martius Square area on Griswold between Fort and Congress.

 

Q. How do you become a member of the Board of Directors?
A. All DMBA members are eligible for election to the Board of Directors if they have been a Standard Member for at least four (4) years immediately preceding the election. Interested parties should submit a letter of interest to the nominating committee, which usually meets the 1st week of February. The nominating committee will submit two names for each position to be filled at the next annual election of directors. The report shall be filed with the Executive Director no later than February 15 of each year and the election is completed by May15.

 

Q. What types of annual events does the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association provide?

 

Q. Is Continuing Legal Education (CLE) offered and is it mandatory in the State of Michigan?
A. Continuing Legal Education is not mandatory in the State of Michigan.
